The first King of Carnival, King Rex, was established in 1872. This tradition is rumored to have been inspired by Grand Duke Alexis Romanov's anticipated visit to New Orleans to witness the festivities. Since that time, the King of Mardi Gras has played an important part of the annual celebrations.
