Mardi Gras has been celebrated in the United States since the first French settlers arrived in the early 1700s. Masked balls and parades have been a part of this tradition ever since. Under the protective shield of masks, party goers were so raucous that masks were deemed illegal for decades in the early 19th century. After the ban was lifted, New Orleans overflowed with masked debauchery once again and has been an important part of the celebrations ever since.
